On Saturday, April 16th, members of the Memphis Newspaper Guild, who are currently fighting The Commercial Appeal to get a fair contract, protested the grand opening party for the year-old offices of The DeSoto Appeal. “We truly were the `skunk at the picnic,'” says AFL-CIO organizer Shannon Duffy. “They were all set up for this nice little event, complete with a tent for music and balloons for the kiddos, and we set up camp less than 100 feet away, stopping cars on the way in and [handing] out flyers.” Unfortunately, some demonstrators, protesting the CA‘s attempted abolition of the Guild’s Evergreen clause, decided to dress up like trees, making them rather difficult to see.– Chris Davis
